Tell Facebook to Protect Kids Online

While working on Sext Up Kids, which recently re-aired on CBC Doc Zone (produced by Dream Street Pictures), I was struck by the insidious paradox that’s tormenting so many young teen girls. The dominant mainstream media message to young girls and teens is to look sexy and act sexy – but if you do, you’ll be judged harshly for it.

Slut shaming on social media is so rampant some girls can’t take the torment anymore. Since Amanda Todd’s tragic suicide, plenty of solutions have been suggested, most in the realm of more parental control to more cyber-bullying. I believe corporations like Facebook can do a lot more to protect kids. That’s why I signed this public letter to Sheryl Sandberg, the head of Facebook.
