Bill Berloni Rocks

| by | Add Comment

Trainer Bill Berloni & Nigel-Photo Steve RendallOne of the delights of making Dog Dazed  was getting to meet Bill Berloni, an expert on dog behaviour, who blew me away with his generosity and kindness.

Berloni trains animals for Broadway shows (like Annie) and films (like Charlie Wilson’s War). He even won a Tony in 2011 for excellence in theatre. So, he’s a pretty big deal, which makes the fact that he donates his time as a behavioural specialist for the Humane Society of New York all the more special. (It also makes his generosity with us during the making of this doc all the more special.)

Bill’s happy to give back to the animals that have made him who he is today because, he says, “not only do they provide me with great companionship and my career, you know, I feel like I’m doing something for society by helping the dogs who don’t have a chance.”

Working at the Humane Society, Bill has first-hand knowledge of why dogs end up homeless, and more often than not it’s because people have chosen the wrong dog for their lifestyle, and don’t properly socialise the dog they do choose. “When most people go looking for a dog,” Bill told us, “they go shopping. And they’re attracted to a dog for some ad they’ve seen or some visual idea of what the perfect dog is instead of looking for a lifetime companion.”

Bill spent quite some time with us going over the mistakes people make choosing and training a dog – and how to do it right. We had originally hoped to get some footage of him and the dog he was training for the Broadway musical, The Wizard of Oz, in Times Square, but by the end of what turned out to be a long, painstakingly detailed interview, we figured we’d lost the opportunity since his schedule is always jam-packed.

But Bill not only told us he’d make the time for us to get our shot, he even drove the whole crew downtown! If you’ve ever tried to drive in downtown Manhattan or park near Times Square, you’ll get what a big favour this was.

Bill Berloni isn’t just a honey of a human, he also knows his dogs. If you’re thinking about getting a dog or just want to know a little more about dogs in the city, you can benefit from his expertise with the dog selector videos that’ll be showing up shortly at the CBC Doc Zone site. And, of course, watch Dog Dazed THURSDAY MARCH 21, 2013 AT 9:00 PM/9:30 NT ON CBC-TV. In the meantime, here’s a little Bill Berloni hit.

A Director’s Dog Daze

#25 - Producer Writer Director Helen Slinger and her pooch Billie-Photo Katherine Daly Morris_Bountiful FilmsThe idea for Dog Dazed came in a moment of great personal embarrassment.

About two years ago I attended a public meeting in the Capilano River Regional Park near my home in North Vancouver – an information session about off-leash restrictions in the local watershed where I walk my dog. A large pack of area dog-owners attended, snapping and snarling at the very idea of limiting their dogs’ freedom.

As the proud owner of a 13-year-old Husky-Whippet X, I was amongst those rabid dog people.

I woke up the next morning very embarrassed that somehow I’d forgotten about the natural environment. Oops! A classic example of human myopia – always rich territory for a documentary. The research for Dog Dazed began that day.

Why is it such a hot button topic now?

Changing demographics (empty nester baby boomers, child-delaying millennials, more people staying single) means we are now seeing more dogs than children in homes. US figures in 2010 showed that 39 million American households included kids, compared to 43 million with dogs.

Why are we so dog dazed? There’s fascinating new research about just how dogs ingratiate themselves into our homes – and into our hearts.

When dog owners care so passionately about their dog, and with so many dogs (84 million across North America) there is a point of friction – not everyone loves dogs and what they do (and leave) in the environment. This has led to some feisty skirmishes…and a planning nightmare for civic authorities.

This was a natural project on which to team up once again with legendary animator Cordell Barker. His comedic genius allows us to laugh at our foibles, making them easier to see and, perhaps, to accept.

We criss-crossed the continent to hear stories from the battlefields of dog wars, and to find some solutions to the insanity. In the end, Dog Dazed celebrates our love affair with dogs, and all their delightful dogginess – while encouraging a new relationship that is more respectful of wildlife and non-doggy people. – Helen

Dog Dazed airs on CBC Doc Zone on Thursday, March 21 – 9pm/9:30 NT

Dog Dazed – Mountains of Doo

Happy loopy dogSo my dog Billie isn’t super big – under 50 pounds – and we definitely don’t overfeed her svelte Husky/Whippet X self. (Love the dog, can you tell?)

But yesterday she pooped FOUR times.

It was a day like this a year or so ago that got me thinking about just how much dog poop is generated every day in dog-crazy North America. I decided we had to include that statistic in our documentary on the proliferation of urban dogs.

It was a bit of an odyssey but we tracked it down. Across North America, dogs deposit some 30 thousand tons of waste daily! That’s the weight of 153 Great Blue Whales, the biggest mammal on Earth!! See how we did the Poop Math – http://www.cbc.ca/doczone/episode/dog-dazed.html

Tell Facebook to Protect Kids Online

While working on Sext Up Kids, which recently re-aired on CBC Doc Zone (produced by Dream Street Pictures), I was struck by the insidious paradox that’s tormenting so many young teen girls. The dominant mainstream media message to young girls and teens is to look sexy and act sexy – but if you do, you’ll be judged harshly for it.

Slut shaming on social media is so rampant some girls can’t take the torment anymore. Since Amanda Todd’s tragic suicide, plenty of solutions have been suggested, most in the realm of more parental control to more cyber-bullying. I believe corporations like Facebook can do a lot more to protect kids. That’s why I signed this public letter to Sheryl Sandberg, the head of Facebook.

Call us sentimental but every year at this time when we’re heading up our local trail and see that, seemingly overnight, dog owners have decorated a wild tree with photographs of their dearly departed pets…well, we tear up.

When the Devil Knocks has been nominated for a 2011 Gemini Award in the category of Best Biography Documentary!

We’re looking forward to the awards, but certainly wish that Hilary could enjoy this moment with us….

A Word from Hilary’s Therapist

I am thrilled with the outpouring of positive responses to the documentary and to the radio interview about Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) with Anna Maria Tremonti on The Current the morning When the Devil Knocks ran on The Passionate Eye.

I’ve heard from therapists who work with DID clients, spouses and partners seeking information for their loved ones who suffer with DID and are having trouble finding adequate treatment, from former clients, and from friends and strangers alike who have offered their congratulations.

Hilary’s Daughter

When I wrote Hilary’s family to let them know that Hilary’s story will be on The Passionate Eye tomorrow, daughter Jenny (who’s featured in the documentary) wrote me back such a moving email that I asked her if I could share it:

“I am making up posters to put up around town telling people when it is showing!

… it is hard to miss her so much just when I finally had her, not only the really cool person to know, but the mother I’d always yearned for – but it is more our loss than hers… she had become well and happy, seen her life’s work completed, and was in the place she loved best, with the person she loved most, apparently even listening to their favourite song. She was given a really hard life, and she kicked its butt! I miss the heck out of her, but I am happy for her too.” – Jenny

Jenny, we’ll do our best to get Hilary’s story as far out into the world as we can. – Helen Slinger

When the Devil Knocks – Wednesday January 26 at 10 pm ET and PT on CBC News Network’s The Passionate Eye.

Did you know that dissociative identity disorder is about as common as bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia?

Or that our personalities actually start out fractured…and normally integrate as we age?

Find out much more about dissociative identity disorder and the making of When the Devil Knocks when you listen to Helen Slinger and Radio Canada International’s Marc Montgomery.
